The disinfecting potential of Far UV-C light has been recognised for years, but researchers and companies in the sterilisation industry have continued to struggle with one particular safety concern: even when a Far UV-C lamp is designed to emit Far UV-C light of 222 nanometres (nm) only, the nature of UV-C light is that the lamp will inevitably emit small amounts of secondary emissions in other wavelengths as well.

These secondary emissions in other wavelengths than 222 nm can potentially be harmful to human tissue and eyes.

However, with the patented safety filter technology, we are now able to eliminate that safety concern, making UV222 a major breakthrough in the market.

Care222® filters out dangerous UV-C rays: Beware of imitations and manipulated data!

Ushio is very keen to stress that unfiltered excimer discharge lamps are not mono-spectral. This means that although Care222® has a peak wavelength of 222 nm, wavelengths between 200 nm and 320 nm are also emitted at various intensities. For this reason, Ushio has worked with research partners from around the world to develop an optical band-pass filter which prevents harmful UV-C rays from leaving the lamp. This patented filter has been exclusively licenced to Ushio.

With that said, Ushio would like to issue a very serious warning. There are many companies and groups advocating the use of UV-C disinfection, but they do so without stressing the serious nature of this band of radiation. Without the crucial optical band-pass filter, even Ushio’s 222 nm technology would be harmful to humans. It is important that you question your UV-C disinfection lamp supplier very carefully. If they simply tell you that 222 nm is safe and their lamp does not emit any other wavelength – walk away and find a supplier that knows what they are talking about. Failure to do so could put you in a situation that risks damage to the health of anyone who is exposed to unfiltered UV radiation.

Case Aarhus University Hospital

Protecting vulnerable patients 

Our lamps are installed in the waiting area of the Department of Respiratory Diseases and Allergy at Aarhus University Hospital (AUH), for the protection of vulnerable patients.

In a joint effort between Aarhus University and AUH, disinfection of surfaces in the area has been tested. Results show that UV222 exposure significantly reduces the overall bacterial load and eliminates pathological bacterial species in this out-patient clinic daily.
